To understand the field is the first step.  Think of the field as a giant game board.  It is 100 yards long with 50 yards for each side of play.

Midfield is the 50 yard line.  It separates each team's "side" per half that they have to defend.  At each end is the sweet area called the End Zone.

Both teams are trying to cross the other team's end zone to score a:

touchdown

6 points

The field is numbered every 10 yards.  Every 5 yards there is a line that goes across the field with hash marks for each yard.   All of these markings are used to position how far the ball is advanced on each play.

The numbers count down from the 50 yard line down to the End Zone.

The RED ZONE is an area of the field from the 20 yard line to the end zone.  It's called this because when you have the ball and you are in the opposing teams red zone, it's important you score points since you are so close.   The goal is to score the touchdown for the most points (6), or at the very least score a field goal (3).
